Overview

A-kinase anchor inhibitor 1 (AKAIN1) is a protein-coding gene and short protein, enriched in neural tissue, that enables protein kinase A (PKA) binding activity and is involved in protein localization within the cytosol. Unlike classic A-kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs) which tether PKA to defined subcellular locations, AKAIN1 disrupts PKA–AKAP interactions, thereby modulating the localization and signaling of PKA. It preferentially binds to PKA type II regulatory subunits and is predicted to function as an endogenous disruptor of PKA–AKAP anchoring. While not itself a direct drug target, AKAIN1 may be relevant to signaling pathways involved in neural plasticity and mood disorders through its regulatory influence on PKA localization and activity.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable (as AKAIN1 is not a drug target; it modulates PKA signaling by inhibiting anchoring, which may indirectly impact drug responses involving PKA signaling)
