A-kinase anchoring protein 14 (AKAP14) is a member of the A-kinase anchoring protein (AKAP) family, which are structurally diverse proteins characterized by their ability to bind the regulatory subunits of protein kinase A (PKA) and physically anchor PKA holoenzyme to defined locations within the cell[2][4][5]. AKAP14, also known as AKAP28, is involved in targeting PKA to the ciliary axonemes, thereby regulating ciliary beat frequency and contributing to the organization of localized cAMP signaling[4][6]. There are several alternatively spliced isoforms. While AKAP family proteins play essential roles as scaffolds that integrate cAMP signaling with other pathways, AKAP14 itself is not established as a classical therapeutic target (such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or ion channel), but genetic variants have been associated with some disease phenotypes including mitochondrial dysfunction and certain cancers[4].
