Overview

A549 is a human cell line established from a lung carcinoma (adenocarcinoma) of a 58-year-old male, characterized by features of alveolar type II epithelial cells. These cells grow as adherent monolayers, exhibit squamous morphology, and are capable of synthesizing lecithin and surfactant-like phospholipids. A549 cells are widely used as research models for human non-small cell lung cancer biology, pulmonary toxicology, drug screening, metabolism, viral infection, and immune response. They are not a molecular or pharmacological therapeutic target but serve as a surrogate for studying lung epithelial cell biology and drug responses.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable as the cell line is not a drug target, but drugs tested on A549 cells often act through induction of apoptosis, inhibition of cell proliferation, disruption of cytoskeletal function, or interference with DNA synthesis
