Overview

ABCC5 antisense RNA 1 (ABCC5-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the antisense strand of the ABCC5 gene locus. Like other antisense RNAs, ABCC5-AS1 does not encode a protein but may play important regulatory roles at the level of gene transcription and chromatin modification. These RNAs can act in cis (locally on the same chromosome region) or in trans (distally on different loci). The specific functions of ABCC5-AS1 itself are not fully characterized but could involve influencing gene expression of ABCC5, which encodes a multidrug resistance protein and transporter. No current drugs or approved biomarkers directly interact with ABCC5-AS1, but antisense oligonucleotide technologies could theoretically target it for gene modulation. ABCC5-AS1 should not be confused with the ABCC5 protein (multidrug resistance-associated protein 5), which is a well-established transporter and therapeutic target in cancer and drug resistance. The antisense RNA is a regulatory molecule and not a standard pharmacological target, enzyme, receptor, or transporter.
