Target intelligence / Profile preview
The **abdominal aortic aneurysm sac** refers to the dilated segment or cavity of the abdominal aorta affected by aneurysm—the persistent, balloon-like bulging of the vessel wall, typically defined as an enlargement greater than 3 cm in diameter or more than 50% increase over normal diameter. The sac contains blood flow and sometimes thrombus material, and is at risk of rupture, which is life-threatening. Surgical or endovascular therapies—such as stent grafting—aim to exclude the sac from blood flow to prevent rupture. The "sac" terminology is common in interventional radiology and endovascular surgery, for instance in monitoring endoleak (contrast/blood flow into the excluded aneurysm sac after stent graft repair) or sac size reduction as a measure of procedural success. While no drugs "target" the aneurysm sac itself, research into molecular imaging of AAA uses biomarkers such as elastin degradation products, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and smooth muscle cell (SMC) apoptosis for disease monitoring and progression, but these are targets for detection, not direct therapy. Canonically, molecular/therapeutic targets in AAA include MMPs, inflammatory pathways, and ECM proteins, rather than the anatomical "sac".
