The **abdominal wall somatic nerves** are a group of peripheral nerves, mainly derived from the thoracoabdominal nerves (T7-T11 intercostal nerves and the subcostal nerve, T12), that supply segmental sensory (somatic) and motor innervation to the muscles and skin of the abdominal wall. These nerves traverse the abdominal wall, running between the muscle layers, and give off lateral cutaneous branches supplying sensation to the skin, as well as innervating muscles such as the rectus abdominis, external and internal obliques, and transversus abdominis. They are not a single defined molecular entity or receptor but rather anatomical nerves composed of bundles of axons[1][2][3]. They are clinically important in surgical procedures (risk of injury, site of nerve blocks for anesthesia) but are not considered therapeutic molecular targets in the sense of receptors, enzymes, or transporter proteins[1][2].
