Abelson Non-Receptor Tyrosine Kinase (ABL)

Target
ABL
Molecular classification
Non-receptor tyrosine kinase, Enzyme
01

Overview

Abelson non-receptor tyrosine kinases are a family of cytoplasmic and nuclear protein tyrosine kinases, primarily represented by ABL1 (also known as c-Abl) and ABL2 (also known as Arg). These enzymes play crucial roles in regulating diverse cellular processes, including cell division, differentiation, adhesion, migration, stress response (such as DNA repair), and apoptosis. Constitutive activation due to genetic alterations is implicated in several cancers, notably chronic myeloid leukemia. Small molecule inhibitors targeting Abl kinase activity such as imatinib have become paradigms for targeted cancer therapy.
