This transcript is generally believed to be non-protein coding, subject to nonsense-mediated decay, and does not correspond to a functional protein product. Some databases annotate it as protein-coding, but the evidence is inconsistent, and no biological, mechanistic, or therapeutic roles have been established. Its annotations and associations typically derive from the parent genes; ACY1 is a cytosolic zinc-binding enzyme involved in acyl-amino acid metabolism and is clinically relevant for aminoacylase 1 deficiency, but those functional roles do not apply to the ABHD14A-ACY1 readthrough transcript itself.
