Overview

Abnormal cannabidiol (Abn-CBD) is a synthetic regioisomer of cannabidiol, structurally distinct from naturally occurring cannabinoids and does not possess the psychoactive or sedative properties associated with THC or traditional CBD[1][2][8]. It acts predominantly through non-classical cannabinoid receptors, mainly GPR18 and possibly GPR55, leading to effects such as vasodilation, lowered blood pressure, increased cell migration/proliferation in microglia, and modulation of inflammatory responses[1][6][8]. Abnormal cannabidiol may have therapeutic potential for inflammatory and metabolic diseases, and more recently, it has been identified as an inhibitor of CRBP1, implicating a role in vitamin A metabolism and protection against retinal damage[14]. Clinical relevance remains investigational, with research limited to in vitro and animal model studies. The compound is mainly used in basic research as a probe to identify novel cannabinoid receptor pharmacology or retinoid metabolism modulators[1][8][14].

Mechanism of action

Acts as an agonist or modulator of non-classical cannabinoid receptors, primarily GPR18 and possibly GPR55, separate from CB1 and CB2. It also inhibits cellular retinol-binding protein 1 (CRBP1), modifying retinoid metabolism.
