Abnormal keratinocyte describes epidermal keratinocyte cells that display atypical activation, differentiation, or function, resulting from deregulated genetic, proteolytic, immune, or signaling pathways[1][2][3][4][5]. This abnormality underlies a variety of skin disorders, including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, Netherton syndrome, and non-healing wounds, and manifests as altered proliferation, abnormal barrier function, morphological changes, and dysregulation of immune or inflammatory responses. Aberrant proteolysis, calcium signaling, gene expression, and cytokine production are frequently implicated, but "abnormal keratinocyte" itself is descriptive of a cell state rather than a molecular target for direct pharmacological intervention.
