The accessory gene regulator (*agr*) system in *Staphylococcus aureus* is a central quorum-sensing regulatory circuit that controls the expression of numerous virulence factors, biofilm formation, and resistance mechanisms. It enables the bacteria to sense cell density and coordinate a switch from an adherent, colonizing state to an invasive, toxin-producing state as population density increases. Targeting components of the *agr* system is considered a promising anti-virulence strategy.
