Aceria pongamiae Keifer

01

Overview

Aceria pongamiae Keifer is a microscopic species of eriophyid mite that acts as a specialized agricultural pest of the Pongamia pinnata (Karanj) tree. It is not a therapeutic molecular target (such as a human receptor or enzyme) but rather a whole organism that induces the formation of characteristic finger-like galls on the dorsal surface of host leaves. These galls provide a protective microhabitat for the mites to feed and reproduce, which significantly impairs the photosynthetic capacity of the tree and can lead to premature leaf drop and reduced seed yield. Management of Aceria pongamiae typically involves the application of chemical acaricides or botanical extracts (like neem oil) to mitigate the infestation and preserve the health of the host plant. In the context of biotechnology and pharmacology, this organism is studied for its host-parasite interactions and its vulnerability to various neurotoxic or metabolic-disrupting pesticides (Keifer, 1966; ICAR-NBAIR).

Mechanism of action

Acaricides control the organism through various mechanisms including chloride channel activation (abamectin) or inhibition of lipid biosynthesis (spiromesifen) to induce paralysis and death in the mite population (Sreeramulu et al., 2018).
