Overview

Acetate, commonly encountered as the acetate ion (CH3COO-), is a short-chain fatty acid and a key intermediate in metabolism. When used in medical or physiological contexts, especially as part of intravenous fluids or parenteral nutrition, acetate serves as an efficient precursor to bicarbonate (HCO3-), helping to maintain acid-base balance. It is metabolized primarily in muscle tissue via the TCA cycle to produce bicarbonate, effectively counteracting metabolic acidosis. Acetate is often preferred over lactate or citrate when rapid correction of acidosis is needed or when liver function may be compromised.
