Overview

Acetyl coenzyme A synthetase (ACS) is an enzyme (EC 6.2.1.1) that catalyzes the activation of acetate by converting it into acetyl-CoA. This reaction is crucial for cellular metabolism, linking energy production in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, fatty acid synthesis, and other biosynthetic pathways. There are multiple isoforms, including ACSS1 (mitochondrial) and ACSS2 (cytoplasmic/nuclear). ACS plays a role in energy metabolism, biosynthesis, and epigenetic regulation. Dysregulation or mutation can impact energy homeostasis, and targeted manipulation has implications in cancer biology.
