Overview

The acetylcholine receptor alpha1 subunit, encoded by the CHRNA1 gene, is a critical component of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) found primarily at neuromuscular junctions. This subunit plays a central role in binding acetylcholine and initiating channel gating, which leads to muscle contraction. It is a major antigenic target in autoimmune myasthenia gravis and mutations are associated with congenital myasthenic syndromes.
