Overview

The acetylcholine receptor gamma subunit (AChR γ-subunit) is a protein component of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR), specifically found in skeletal muscle. Encoded by the CHRNG gene, this subunit is part of a ligand-gated ion channel mediating synaptic transmission at neuromuscular junctions, enabling communication between nerve and muscle cells essential for movement. The γ-subunit is present in fetal muscle and is later replaced by the ε-subunit in adult muscle. It plays a critical role in the formation of AChR clusters during development. Mutations in CHRNG can cause congenital myasthenic syndromes.
