Acetylcholine Release

Overview

Acetylcholine (ACh) release refers to the process by which the neurotransmitter acetylcholine is secreted from nerve terminals into synaptic clefts, enabling communication between neurons or between neurons and muscle cells. This process is fundamental for both central and peripheral nervous system function, mediating voluntary muscle movement, autonomic regulation, and various cognitive processes. Release is triggered by calcium influx into presynaptic terminals, leading to exocytosis of ACh-containing vesicles. The process is regulated by presynaptic receptors. Termination of action occurs via acetylcholinesterase. Drugs and toxins can modulate this process, impacting various diseases.
