Acetylcholine (ACh) release in ileal smooth muscle is a crucial process for regulating gastrointestinal motility. ACh, released from cholinergic neurons in the enteric nervous system, acts on muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs), predominantly the M3 subtype, to stimulate smooth muscle contraction. This process is modulated by factors like nitric oxide (NO), which inhibits ACh release.
