Target intelligence / Profile preview
Acetylcholine synthesis is the process by which the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) is produced in cholinergic neurons. This process involves the enzyme choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) which catalyzes the reaction between choline and acetyl-CoA to form ACh. The rate of synthesis is influenced by the availability of choline and acetyl-CoA, as well as neuronal activity and calcium ion concentration. Following synthesis, ACh is stored in synaptic vesicles for later release into the synaptic cleft.
