Molecular classification
Neurotransmission Pathway
01

Overview

Acetylcholinergic neurotransmission refers to the process by which the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) is synthesized, released, and acts on its receptors to mediate communication between nerve cells or between nerves and muscles. This system is fundamental for both central and peripheral nervous system functions, including voluntary muscle movement, autonomic regulation, memory, attention, arousal, and learning. Key components include the synthesis of ACh from choline and acetyl CoA by choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), storage in synaptic vesicles, release upon Ca²⁺ influx, binding to nicotinic or muscarinic receptors, and termination of the signal by acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Dysfunction in this pathway is associated with diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Myasthenia gravis.
