Acetylcholinesterase (AChE)

Target
AChE
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Serine hydrolase, Cholinesterase
01

Overview

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is a serine hydrolase enzyme that catalyzes the rapid hydrolysis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) into choline and acetic acid. It is primarily found at neuromuscular junctions and cholinergic brain synapses and plays a crucial role in terminating synaptic transmission by removing ACh from the synaptic cleft. Inhibition of AChE leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine, causing prolonged stimulation, and is the basis for toxicity seen with organophosphorus compounds. Therapeutic inhibitors are used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and certain neuromuscular disorders.
