01

Overview

An acetylcholinesterase substrate is any molecule upon which the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) acts. The primary physiological substrate for AChE is the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. When a compound serves as an AChE substrate, it is hydrolyzed by this enzyme, typically resulting in decreased levels of that compound and increased turnover of its breakdown products. In pharmacological contexts, "acetylcholinesterase substrates" can also refer to compounds designed to probe or modulate AChE activity.
