Overview

Achaete-scute family bHLH transcription factor 3 (ASCL3) is a member of the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) family of transcription factors essential for determining cell fate and facilitating the development and differentiation of various tissues, particularly progenitor cells that give rise to ductal and acinar cells in the salivary glands, as well as specific support cells (microvillar cells and Bowman's glands) in the olfactory epithelium. ASCL3 functions predominantly as a transcriptional repressor and is implicated in regulatory networks governing tissue development and regeneration. Although highly expressed during key phases of epithelial development and repair, ASCL3 is not known to be a direct therapeutic target, nor are there known interacting drugs or established biomarker or safety concern contexts. Its altered expression has been observed in certain cancers, such as increased expression in invasive ductal breast carcinoma and decreased expression in some renal, cervical, bladder, lymphoma, and skin cancers, but no clinical targeting strategies are established.
