Overview

The strategy of administering metabolizable anions (lactate, acetate, or gluconate) in intravenous fluids to correct or maintain acid–base homeostasis. These anions are metabolized into bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻), which buffers excess hydrogen ions (H⁺) and regulates blood pH.
