Target intelligence / Profile preview
Acid-base balance via bicarbonate precursor metabolism refers to the physiological processes that maintain blood and tissue pH within a narrow range, primarily through the generation, reabsorption, and regulation of bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻) ions. This system is central to acid-base homeostasis in humans and other animals. It involves the lungs regulating CO₂ levels through ventilation and the kidneys regulating systemic bicarbonate concentration by reabsorbing filtered bicarbonate, excreting excess acids or bases, and generating new bicarbonate from metabolic precursors.
Regulation of blood pH through bicarbonate buffering and renal/respiratory compensation mechanisms.
