The physiological and pharmacological process by which lactate, administered as part of intravenous solutions, is metabolized in the liver into bicarbonate. This conversion provides an alkalinizing effect, helping correct metabolic acidosis by increasing plasma bicarbonate levels. Effectiveness depends on adequate tissue perfusion and hepatic function.
Lactate is metabolized in the liver to pyruvate, which is then converted to glycogen or oxidized to carbon dioxide and water, generating bicarbonate in the process. The sodium ion present in these solutions combines with newly formed bicarbonate ions, aiding retention in plasma and combating acidosis.
