Acid ceramidase (ASAH1) is a lysosomal enzyme that hydrolyzes ceramides into sphingosine and free fatty acids. It plays a crucial role in regulating cell differentiation, proliferation, apoptosis, and membrane composition. Deficiency leads to Farber disease. It is also implicated in cancer, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes, making it a therapeutic target.
