Overview

Acidic fibroblast growth factor intracellular-binding protein (FIBP) is an **intracellular protein** that selectively binds to **acidic fibroblast growth factor (FGF1, also called aFGF)**[1][6]. FIBP is encoded by the FIBP gene on human chromosome 11[1][6]. It is *postulated* to be involved in the **mitogenic action** (stimulation of cell division) of FGF1 and may modulate its effects in various cell types[1][6]. FIBP interacts with FGF1 intracellularly and may help mediate or regulate FGF1-driven cellular processes such as cell proliferation and differentiation[1][4][6]. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene[1]. No direct evidence classifies FIBP as a therapeutic target (such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor), and there are currently no drugs known to directly target FIBP[1][4][6]. Its principal significance relates to its modulatory role in the intracellular actions of FGF1—a multifunctional growth factor involved in embryonic development, cell growth, tissue repair, and tumorigenesis[2]. There is no indication in current data that FIBP is a receptor, misnamed, or incorrectly specified[1][4][6].
