Acidic Mammalian Chitinase (AMCase)

Target
AMCase
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Glycosyl hydrolase family 18
01

Overview

Acidic mammalian chitinase (AMCase), also known as CHIA, is an enzyme belonging to the glycosyl hydrolase family 18 (GH18). It hydrolyzes chitin, a polymer of β-1,4-linked N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc), which is found in the exoskeletons of insects and crustaceans as well as fungal cell walls. AMCase functions optimally under acidic conditions and plays roles in both digestion and immune defense. Altered expression or function has been associated with several diseases, including asthma, chronic atrophic gastritis, and certain cancers.
