Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic Gram-negative pathogen predominantly encountered as a cause of severe nosocomial infections due to its robust antibiotic resistance mechanisms—posing significant challenges for infection control worldwide. It is a strictly aerobic, non-motile, pleomorphic coccobacillus bacterium that primarily affects immunocompromised individuals, causing a range of infections including bloodstream infections, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and wound infections. Its virulence factors include capsular polysaccharide, lipopolysaccharide, and biofilm formation. Treatment is challenging due to its extensive drug resistance.
