Acoustic backscatter is a physical phenomenon characterized by the reflection of sound waves back to their source after encountering inhomogeneities or small structures within a medium (Wikipedia). In medical diagnostics, particularly quantitative ultrasound, it is used to characterize the physical properties of biological tissues, such as density and elasticity (PubMed, PMID: 10893515). It is not a biological molecule, receptor, or enzyme, and therefore does not function as a therapeutic target for drug intervention (NIH). Instead, it serves as a diagnostic parameter to assess structural changes in organs, such as identifying myocardial scarring or liver fibrosis (StatPearls). The intensity of the backscattered signal provides insights into the microscopic architecture of the tissue, allowing for non-invasive monitoring of disease progression. Because it is a measurement of wave-matter interaction rather than a biochemical entity, it does not possess a mechanism of action or interact with pharmacological agents.
