Overview

Acoustic impedance mismatch in intravascular ultrasound refers to the physical phenomenon where differences in acoustic impedance between adjacent media (e.g., blood and vessel wall, or vessel wall and plaque) cause partial reflection and transmission of ultrasound waves at interfaces[7]. This mismatch leads to enhancement or attenuation of ultrasound signals, depending on the degree of impedance difference. In cardiovascular ultrasound, such mismatches may create artifacts in Doppler spectral measurements and affect image accuracy, especially post-stenosis in coronary arteries. The concept is a physical property of materials/tissues, not a molecular or therapeutic target. Devices such as ultrasound transducers may use specially designed matching layers (e.g., cone-structured metamaterials) to minimize these effects and optimize signal transmission, but the impedance mismatch itself is not a druggable or biologically regulated entity[1][3][4][5][7].
