Overview

The acquired salivary pellicle (ASP) is a thin, acellular, organic film that forms on the tooth surface immediately after exposure to saliva (Siqueira et al., 2012, PMID: 22516304). It is composed of a complex mixture of proteins, glycoproteins, and lipids derived from saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, and microorganisms (Vitorino et al., 2006, PMID: 16723649). The ASP serves as a critical interface between the tooth enamel and the oral environment, providing lubrication, regulating mineral homeostasis, and acting as a semi-permeable barrier against acid-induced demineralization (Hannig & Hannig, 2009, PMID: 19494676). However, it also provides specific receptors for the attachment of primary colonizing bacteria, which can lead to the formation of dental plaque and subsequent oral diseases like caries and periodontitis (Lendenmann et al., 2000, PMID: 11236689). Therapeutic strategies often target the ASP to modify its composition, inhibit pathogen adhesion, or enhance its protective properties through the use of agents like fluoride, chlorhexidine, and phosphopeptides (Vacca-Smith & Bowen, 2000, PMID: 11236691).
