Actin is a highly conserved protein found in all eukaryotic cells. It plays a central role in cell structure and function by forming microfilaments (actin filaments) that are key components of the cytoskeleton and, in muscle cells, the contractile apparatus. Actin exists primarily in two forms: G-actin (Globular actin), the monomeric form, and F-actin (Filamentous actin), the polymerized, fibrous form composed of G-actin subunits arranged helically. It is involved in muscle contraction, cytoskeletal support, cell motility, cytokinesis, intracellular transport and nuclear functions.
