Overview
Actin filaments, when present extracellularly in sputum, form cross-linked bundles that significantly increase sputum viscosity. These cross-links, stabilized by proteins (e.g., lysozyme) and polycations (e.g., spermine), impair mucociliary clearance and promote chronic infection in diseases like cystic fibrosis. Disrupting these cross-links is a potential therapeutic strategy.
