Actinide ions are a series of fifteen radioactive metallic elements with atomic numbers ranging from 89 (actinium) to 103 (lawrencium), including medically and industrially significant isotopes of plutonium, americium, and uranium (National Research Council, 2006). These ions are potent environmental and occupational toxicants that pose severe health risks upon internalization through inhalation, ingestion, or wound contamination. In a biological context, actinides lack any natural physiological function and often mimic essential minerals such as calcium or iron, leading to their sequestration in the skeletal system and liver (Taylor, 1998). This deposition results in chronic internal exposure to alpha and gamma radiation, which significantly increases the risk of developing osteosarcoma, leukemia, and severe organ damage (CDC, 2018). From a pharmacological perspective, actinide ions are the primary targets for decorporation therapy, which utilizes chelating agents to bind the metals into stable, water-soluble complexes. Drugs such as Pentetate calcium trisodium (Ca-DTPA) and Pentetate zinc trisodium (Zn-DTPA) are FDA-approved for this purpose, facilitating the renal excretion of these radionuclides to reduce the overall radiation dose and chemical toxicity (FDA, 2004).
