Activated C1s is a serine protease and a key enzymatic component of the classical pathway of the complement system. It functions as part of the C1 complex, where it becomes activated following sequential activation within this complex. It cleaves complement components C4 and C2, leading to the formation of C3 convertase and amplification of downstream immune responses. Beyond its canonical role, it can cleave other cellular proteins, influencing tissue renewal processes and modulating immunogenicity. Dysregulation can contribute to autoimmune diseases or inflammatory conditions, making it a diagnostic marker and emerging therapeutic target.
