Activated Protein C (APC) is the enzymatically active form of protein C, a vitamin K-dependent plasma glycoprotein. It functions as a serine protease with critical roles in anticoagulation, anti-inflammation, cytoprotection, and maintenance of vascular integrity. APC exerts potent anticoagulant effects primarily by proteolytically inactivating coagulation factors Va and VIIIa. Beyond its role in coagulation, APC modulates inflammation and apoptosis. It promotes fibrinolysis indirectly by reducing levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), thus enhancing breakdown of clots.
