Activated T cell

Molecular classification
Other (Activated T cells are a functional state of the broader "T cell" family, which are lymphocytes and not a single molecular entity such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter)
01

Overview

Activated T cells are T lymphocytes that have encountered their specific antigen presented by an antigen-presenting cell and received necessary co-stimulatory signals. Upon activation, they undergo clonal expansion and differentiate into effector subsets with specialized functions—such as helper functions for B-cell antibody production or direct cytotoxicity against infected/cancerous cells. Activation is marked by upregulation of surface markers including CD69, CD25, and HLA‑DR. While essential for adaptive immunity against infections and tumors, dysregulated activated T-cell responses can drive autoimmunity or excessive inflammation. Importantly, "activated T cell" refers to a cellular state rather than a discrete molecular target; thus it is not considered a canonical therapeutic target like an individual receptor or enzyme.
