Overview

The Activator protein-1 (AP-1) transcription factor complex is an inducible transcription factor made up of homo- or heterodimers predominantly formed from members of the Jun, Fos, Maf, and ATF protein families. AP-1 is activated by a variety of extracellular and intracellular signals, including growth factors, cytokines, stress, and microbial infection. It regulates a vast array of genes by binding to specific DNA motifs (TRE and CRE) in the promoter/enhancer regions of target genes. AP-1 plays essential roles in cell fate decisions such as proliferation, differentiation, survival, and apoptosis. Its dysregulation is implicated in the development and progression of various diseases, notably cancer and inflammatory conditions. AP-1 is receiving significant attention as a drug development target, though its functional complexity and dual biological roles present ongoing therapeutic challenges.
