Overview

ACTRT1 pseudogene 1 (ACTRT1P1) is a processed, nonprotein-coding segment of DNA that closely resembles the ACTRT1 gene, but it is rendered nonfunctional due to inactivating mutations acquired over evolutionary time[5][7][9][11]. Unlike its parental gene ACTRT1—which codes for actin-related protein T1 involved in spermatozoon structure and has documented roles in certain genetic disorders and cancers—ACTRT1P1 as a pseudogene does not produce a functional protein and is not considered a therapeutic target. While some pseudogenes in general may modulate gene expression by acting as competing endogenous RNAs or via other RNA-based regulatory mechanisms, there is currently no evidence indicating a biological or disease-related function for ACTRT1P1[4][8]. Important context: The functional gene, ACTRT1 (actin-related protein T1), is involved in male fertility and may act as a tumor suppressor[1][2][3][12]. However, ACTRT1P1 is a distinct, nonfunctional pseudogene located downstream of ACTRT1 and is not implicated in these disease contexts or considered druggable[5]. Pseudogenes are increasingly recognized for potential regulatory functions in some cases, but these are exceptional and not established for ACTRT1P1[4][8]. Therefore, ACTRT1P1 should not be used as a canonical form for drug target information, and returning data from ACTRT1 or ARPT1 in its place would be inaccurate for biomedical databases focused on druggable targets.
