Acyl-CoA binding domain containing 4 (ACBD4)

Overview

Acyl-CoA binding domain containing 4 (ACBD4) is a member of the acyl-coenzyme A binding domain containing protein family. The protein contains a conserved acyl-CoA binding domain which binds medium- and long-chain acyl-CoA esters and may serve as an intracellular carrier of these esters. ACBD4 plays a role in acyl-CoA dependent lipid metabolism, with possible involvement in fatty acid transport and regulatory functions within cellular metabolic pathways. Multiple transcript variants exist, and recent studies link ACBD4 to rare inherited diseases such as retinal dystrophy with leukodystrophy and congenital myopathy 4A, autosomal dominant. While other related acyl-CoA binding proteins have broader functions, ACBD4’s principal annotated roles are in fatty acid metabolism. No direct therapeutic drugs or validated biomarkers currently target ACBD4.
