Acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4 (ACSL4) is an enzyme that converts free long-chain fatty acids into their active form, acyl-CoA esters. It plays a central role in lipid metabolism and has a strong preference for arachidonic acid. ACSL4 is involved in regulating apoptosis, eicosanoid synthesis, and is implicated in X-linked intellectual disability and potentially Alport syndrome. Recent research suggests it may be a therapeutic target for hormone-sensitive cancers like breast and prostate cancer.
