Acyl-CoA synthetase medium chain family member 5 pseudogene 1 (ACSM5P1) is a human pseudogene, meaning it is a non-functional genomic DNA sequence similar to a protein-coding gene but lacking the ability to encode a protein[1][2][5]. Pseudogenes can arise via duplication or retrotransposition and often accumulate mutations that disrupt their coding potential. While traditionally regarded as “genomic fossils” with no function, recent research has indicated that some pseudogenes may participate in the regulation of their protein-coding relatives by acting as sources of regulatory noncoding RNAs, as decoys for microRNAs, or by influencing mRNA stability[3][6]. Nevertheless, there is no evidence that ACSM5P1 acts as a therapeutic target, nor that it encodes a functional receptor, enzyme, or other druggable entity[1][2][5].
