ADAM metallopeptidase domain 5 (ADAM5)

Target
ADAM5
Molecular classification
Pseudogene
01

Overview

ADAM metallopeptidase domain 5 (ADAM5) is a member of the ADAM (A Disintegrin And Metalloproteinase) family, which comprises transmembrane proteins with metalloprotease, disintegrin, cysteine-rich, and epidermal growth factor-like domains. However, in humans, ADAM5 exists only as a pseudogene (ADAM5P) and does not encode a functional, catalytically active protein. Thus, it does not contribute to known physiological or pathological processes in humans. Functional ADAM genes are important for cell-cell interactions, ectodomain shedding, and development, but these roles are carried out by other ADAM family members, such as ADAM10 and ADAM17, in humans. It is critical to distinguish the human ADAM5 (pseudogene) from its counterparts in other species, where it may have functional importance, particularly in reproductive biology in rodents.
