01

Overview

Adenine phosphoribosyltransferase (APRT) is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the purine salvage pathway, which recycles purines to maintain nucleotide pools and cellular energy balance. It catalyzes the conversion of adenine and 5-phosphoribosyl-1-pyrophosphate (PRPP) into adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and pyrophosphate. Deficiency in APRT activity causes adenine phosphoribosyltransferase deficiency, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by recurrent kidney stones and risk for renal failure. APRT is a promising drug target for antiparasitic therapies since inhibition could selectively affect pathogen viability without harming host cells.
