The human Adenosine Deaminase Acting on RNA 1 (ADAR1) p150 isoform is an IFN-inducible enzyme primarily responsible for broad-spectrum adenosine-to-inosine editing events within cellular RNAs—especially those found in double-stranded conformations—and plays essential roles both in regulating innate immunity through suppression of aberrant MDA5 activation and maintaining normal physiological processes such as embryonic development and adaptive immune responses. Its dysfunction underlies several genetic disorders involving pigmentation or autoinflammation due to improper handling or sensing of endogenous nucleic acids.
