Adenosine deaminase tRNA-specific 2 (ADAT2) is an enzyme that functions as a catalytic subunit of the tRNA adenosine deaminase complex, responsible for converting adenosine to inosine at the wobble position (position 34) of various tRNAs[1][3][6][8]. This post-transcriptional modification expands the decoding capacity of tRNAs and is essential for accurate protein synthesis. In eukaryotes, ADAT2 forms a heterodimer with ADAT3 to achieve substrate recognition and catalytic activity[8]. Disruption of ADAT2 activity in model organisms leads to severe defects in cell growth and viability, highlighting its essential biological role[2]. Diseases associated with variants in ADAT2 include neurodevelopmental disorders and primary ciliary dyskinesia[1]. There are no known drugs that specifically target this enzyme, nor is it currently a routine clinical biomarker.
