The Adenosine monophosphate–activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway is a central regulator of cellular and whole-body energy homeostasis. AMPK is activated by increased AMP/ATP or ADP/ATP ratios, signaling low cellular energy. Activation of AMPK leads to the restoration of ATP levels by switching off anabolic pathways and switching on catabolic pathways. It is a heterotrimeric enzyme composed of α, β, and γ subunits. Dysregulation of AMPK activity contributes to metabolic syndrome components and it represents an attractive drug target for treating metabolic diseases.
