Overview

The adenosine A1 receptor (A1AR) is a G protein-coupled receptor that uses adenosine as its endogenous ligand. It is widely distributed throughout the body, with high expression in the central nervous system and moderate expression in peripheral tissues such as the heart, kidney, and pancreas. A1AR activation inhibits neurotransmitter release, reduces heart rate and contractility, and reduces renal blood flow. It is a potential therapeutic target for cardiac arrhythmias, neuroprotection, and sleep disorders.
